Minnesota is an amazing place to elope no matter the season! It really comes down to what you prefer. But I’d love to share my opinion on the seasons so that it can help you decide for yourself.
Spring is often a really good time to elope because of the blossoming trees and the moderate weather, it’s not too warm and not too cold, so it feels comfortable. Another great thing about spring is that there are hardly any bugs yet, which makes outdoor ceremonies much more enjoyable. The only downside is that depending on where you are in Minnesota, things can be a bit slow. Northern Minnesota tends to have a later blossoming season, while southern Minnesota’s trees bloom earlier, giving you that colorful backdrop sooner. So, if you’re eloping in northern Minnesota, you’d probably want to plan for late spring, whereas in southern Minnesota, early spring works better. Central Minnesota usually falls somewhere in the middle. That said, spring weather can be unpredictable, and the lakes are still pretty cool, so swimming might not be ideal unless you consider other options. But in my opinion, spring is a wonderful time to elope because the benefits outweigh the challenges.
Summer is my favorite time to elope in Minnesota because the weather is usually very nice. It can get pretty warm, but most of the time it’s comfortable. By summer, all the trees are fully leafed out, so you don’t have to worry about any bare patches. The water is perfect for swimming or any lake activities you might want to do. Summer is also more predictable when it comes to sunrise and sunset times. They’re steady, so you don’t have to guess or worry about changing light. The only downside is the bugs, if you’re heading into the woods, you’ll definitely want to bring bug spray because mosquitoes can be pretty intense depending on where you are. Aside from that, summer is a fantastic season for eloping.
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for elopements because of the stunning backdrop it offers. You often get a mix of colors, sometimes there’s still some green if you like that, but mostly it’s a beautiful blend of oranges, reds, and yellows. Minnesota’s fall scenery is truly breathtaking. The weather is just right… not too cold, but comfortably cool. You can still enjoy all the activities you’d do in summer, but fall brings a cozy, different vibe that feels really special. It’s also one of the best times for sightseeing here. If you’re heading up north, I’d recommend going earlier in the fall because the leaves tend to drop quickly there. For central and southern Minnesota, mid-fall is usually perfect. Overall, fall is a fantastic time to elope.. You really can’t go wrong with it!
In my opinion, winter isn’t the best time to elope because it’s often cold and uncomfortable to be outside, unless you have a cozy Airbnb with a sauna or hot tub. Without those, winter can feel like a bit of a bummer. Plus, there’s not much color, so photos can look a little bland, especially if you’re wearing a white dress that blends into the snowy background. You want to stand out in your pictures, right?
That said, winter can be amazing if you have the right setup. It’s the perfect season to get cozy and enjoy fun winter activities like ice skating or snowball fights. So, if you plan activities that fit the season, winter elopements can be really special. But if you’re just planning to sightsee, winter isn’t the best choice in Minnesota. Overall, winter is great for activities but not so great for sightseeing.
Ultimately, the best time to elope in Minnesota depends on your personal style and what kind of vibe you want for your special day. Whether it’s a fresh spring morning, a sunny summer evening, a colorful, cozy fall morning, or a snowy winter afternoon, Minnesota has something beautiful to offer all year round.
