Just because you elope it doesn’t mean it needs to be rushed or a secret. It should be a meaningful and wonderful experience tailored to you and your partner. Although planning an elopement can be a bit stressful. In this guide, I’ll walk you through some questions you might have and answers to those questions so you know where to start.
• Go to a county courthouse in Minnesota with your partner. (Doesn’t have to be a particular courthouse) Both of you will need a valid ID – like a driver’s license or passport.
• Pay the fee (usually around $115, but it can vary).
• No waiting period! Once you have the license, you can get married right away, your license will be good for a total of 6 months!
• A judge or court official.
• An ordained or licensed clergy member (minister, priest, rabbi, etc.).
• A person authorized by the state to perform marriages, which can include certain public officials or a friend or family who can get a one-time special authorization from the state to officiate.
• State Parks: You usually need a permit and sometimes a reservation. There may be fees and specific rules about group size, location, and timing.
• City Parks: YES a permit is required for elopements or gatherings. The rules and fees vary by city.
• Private Venues: Private outdoor venues like gardens, farms, or cabins typically have their own rules and fees. So this one you’ll need a specific venue to know the answer on permits!
• National Parks or Federal Land: If you want to elope on federal land, like national parks, you must check with the specific park’s administration for permits and regulations.
• After the ceremony, the officiant files the signed marriage certificate with the county.
• Keep a copy of your marriage certificate for your records.
• Officiant signs the marriage certificate after your elopement.
• Officiant or you file the certificate with the county where you got married.
• This filing makes your marriage official.
• Check with the officiant to make sure it’s done on time.
